The Meal
Chanced upon this very interesting and well written poem by Heather Chi from SCGS taken from Uncut (a collection of artistic expression by 11 school girls). She really made the food come alive~
The Meal
(I) appetizers
the lettuce blushes, pulls the tomatoes
over her utter nudeness. The salad folk
shake their head, unable to
pinpoint the need for drama. the bacon bits bury themselves,
like eggs at Easter.
(II) soup
the mushroom soup is ostracized by
its neighbours, who accuse it of being
manufactured.
the spoon feels her skin, lathering
itself in every sinful bit
of cream.
(III) the noodles
the dark, confident noodles treat the onions
they have been fried with,
with blatant arrogance. they are the
main stars, with no real need for condiments.
just salty, just firm enough.
(IV) dessert
cold and beautiful, the ice cream sits
on a bed of nuts and thick chocolate,
slowing and sensually
melting with the heat.
(V) coffee
the coffee declines to comment
on its bitterness, the way
its rawness bites into tongues. if you don’t like me,
it remarks coolly, don’t have me.
